At the heart of the Learning Quality Framework lie Principles 7 and 8.
Principle 7 is about:
Teaching for a learning culture
Teachers surface the learning process, creating a culture in classrooms that systematically cultivates students’ learning habits and attitudes that enable them to face difficulty and uncertainty confidently, and enhances their acquisition of content.
And the partner Principle 8 is about:
Learning from a learning culture
The learning culture of classrooms enables students to take a full and active role in learning by taking increasing control in developing effective learning dispositions.
Principle 7 defines how teacher create a learning-friendly classroom culture, and Principle 8 indicates how learners respond to a learning-friendly culture.
This section offer support for introducing the issues around learning-friendly classroom cultures to teachers.
[/box]Introducing learning friendly cultures to teachers
This section contains everything you might need to introduce learning friendly cultures to teachers.
It underpins 2 key Principles in the LQF – Principles 7 and 8. It will form the basis of many of the small-scale enquiries that teachers will undertake in relation to Indicator 5.1.
[twocol_one]Here is a powerpoint and the associated resources that we would use to introduce teachers to the key ideas behind learning friendly classroom cultures.
This slide deck could be used:
- just as it is to introduce the ideas to staff;
- to help structure a learning conversation amongst/in teams;
- added into your own strategic presentation to ensure staff gain a holistic picture.
Brief explanatory notes can be found under each slide. Fuller supporting information and resources are offered as downloads in ‘Additional Resources’.
What’s in the presentation?
This 41 slide presentation aims to help teachers explore the Teachers’ Palette, the second of 2 models central to building learning powers. The 3 types of classroom culture are explained, explored and reflected upon, and consideration is given to strategies to make classroom cultures ‘learning friendly’. It is designed as a presentation that can form part of a whole-school training day.
In total it might take around 60 / 75 minutes to work through with your staff – and we do urge you to include classroom support staff in this.
It could be used on a training day, or on a twilight(s), or in any way that works for your school.
